Stars of the South

It’s often said that money can’t buy happiness. While a majority of people tend to agree, there is also little dispute that treating yourself to a relaxing afternoon on the back nine or owning a handsome pocket watch worthy of handing down to future generations surely don’t hurt in the pursuit of said happiness. Needless to say, those golf courses and jewelry stores cannot be expected to run themselves. Consequently it becomes someone’s job to provide for us the opportunity to enjoy the finer things in life. The South presents to you some exceptionally hardworking local men and women who are making a good living helping the rest of us live well.

Good Golly, Miss Molly!

Story by Dominique Farrar

With the click of a mouse, Molly Gottschalk went from SCAD underclassman to muse du jour for celebrity photographer and filmmaker David LaChapelle.
If you call Molly Gottschalk a celebrity, she’ll giggle shyly and then effusively deny it. But on paper, her lifestyle has glitz, glam and grandiosity written all over it: Fashion editor of an edgy Los Angeles magazine, jet-setting to Milan for exhibit openings and posing for star-studded photo shoots and music videos in her spare time. While most of her peers are pulling all-nighters to cram for finals, 21-year-old Gottschalk is staying up late with her art-hero and kindred spirit, David LaChapelle, and his A-list posse of social misfits and pop icons.

The Hot List

Story by

It didn't surprise us when our inboxes were flooded with nominations for Savannah's hottest singles; in a city smoldering with eligible guys and gals of all stripes, the most difficult part was whitling down the list to just 10, based on our "hot" criteria--intelligence, community-mindedness, physical beauty and career ambition. The chosen few gathered at Saya Lounge on Broughton Street to pose for photos and tell us a little about what makes them tick. The result is The South's first-ever Hot List; read closely--your soul mate may be hiding on the pages within.

The Making of Fashion

The South magazine believes that beauty and luxury go hand in hand, and that to capture the art of luxury, you simply need to step into the nearest art museum.
For this spread, we set College of Charleston alumna and Bluffton, South Carolina resident Katie Tarver amid various settings at the Jepson Center for the Arts, including a naturally illuminated three-level staircase.
Designed by renowned architect and former Harvard professor Moshe Safdie, the Jepson is the newest endeavor of the oldest public art museum in the South, the Telfair Academy of Art. Opened in March of 2006, the Jepson is home to 64,000-square feet of exhibition and educational studio space, interactive galleries, an auditorium, a café and museum store.
The unique textures and colors of the Portuguese stone building, offset by the dramatic shadows cast by the architecture over the course of the day, are what initially drew our eye to the museum. Unable to photograph the artwork itself, we decided to create our own; using a rich palette of plums, cremes and deep onyx black, we captured our masterpiece on film.
